The power of a well-formed outcome

The number one reason why people don’t get all they want in life is because they never truly decide, with precision, what to aim for.

I bet most people can tell you that they want or don’t want, something or other, whether that may be more money, a better business, to lose weight or closer relationships. But when defined in these terms have you ever noticed how difficult it is to develop a strong feeling of motivation to follow through?

Part of the process we take our clients through is to create more clarity about the future. This means focusing on the future outcome or goal and fully associating to it-making it real. In your mind really seeing it, hearing it, feeling it, knowing it. And knowing when you want it.

By focusing on the future, with clarity and precision, you create internal pressure because of the gap between where you are now and where you want to be.

Another important aspect of a well-formed outcome is to state it in the positive. Instead of wanting to ‘lose’ or ‘get away’ from something it’s far more powerful to focus on what you will gain as a result.

I ask people, when they say what they want, ‘how will you know?’ or ‘what’s your evidence?’ If you want to get rich, what precisely is ‘rich?’ If you want to be fit then ‘how will you know if you’re fit?’ If you haven’t decided how to measure it, precisely, you’ll always be aiming for a moving target. And I’m sure you can imagine how frustrating that is.

So by creating a strong sensory based representation of what you want and deciding upon the evidence you’ll need the percentages begin swing in your favour. So what else will add power?

Think about ecology. In considering what you want, will it truly be worth the output? Are all the things that you’ll contribute in terms of time, effort, money, and emotions worth the end result? If you have aspects of your outcome that are potential friction points then it will hold you back.

So when you can answer ‘yes’ to these questions then your outcomes are well-formed. You have clarity, positive focus, and directed resources. In other words all parts of you want the same thing and are pulling you in the same direction.
