Business Development
The five principles of lasting success
Some years ago I remember reading in a book by, if I remember,
Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen (sellers of over 85 million
books!), that it's a good to create your own personal philosophy.
I liked this idea and, whilst I don’t believe I’ve
come up with anything that hasn’t been thought of before,
I’ve borrowed ideas from many sources to create my own
ideas of creating a successful business.
Success means different things to different people and your
idea of success will undoubtedly be different to mine. But
to create lasting business success I believe there are five
principles that remain consistent. You must…
Know what you want. Most people don’t
experience the kind of results they’d like because they
haven’t defined and refined their vision and set a clear
path forward. The clearer your future becomes the easier it
becomes to create it.
Develop better and better systems. Your business
is a system that's made up of lots of smaller systems. How
well your business performs and what you get out of it depends
on the quality of your systems. You need systems for all functions
including marketing, sales, planning, time management, customer
service, and gathering information. All these work synergistically
to make your business perform.
Create a winning team. Even if you are a
solo-preneur you are doing yourself a disservice if you are
operating your business alone. The refusal to delegate is
often one of the biggest factors that will hold back your
progress. We all have unique talents and this is what we must
focus upon doing. All other tasks should be delegated to people
who would rather do them than you.
Build the right environment. Our environments
affect our thinking and behaviour a lot more than we realise.
Part of creating consistent success is to build environments
that make it easier to succeed. This includes the physical
facilities, equipment, and the general culture.
Ron Dennis, the Managing Director of McLaren knows why environments
are so important. Talking about his mega successful company
he said, "We need highly-motivated, dedicated people,
and such people can only exist if you provide them with an
environment in which they can aspire to be the best. Quite
simply, great facilities attract great people”.
Exercise self-care. If we are in poor shape,
emotionally, physically, or spiritually then none of the above
really matters. To be at our best then we need to look after
ourselves. We must build in the necessary time and create
the right habits to make sure we create maximum health and
energy.
None of this is rocket science. It’s about sticking
to the basics. It seems we are often on the lookout for some
new idea or shortcut to success but in reality if we just
stuck to the fundamentals we can make extraordinary progress.
Much of our coaching and development work, in businesses both
big and small, hinges around assisting our clients to use
and integrate these principles into their businesses and their
lives. If you would like to find out more please contact
